Objective

The respiratory tract is one of the most common sites for infection as it frequently comes into contact with a variety of pathogens. Clinical presentation of these infections are very similar and symptoms alone are not sufficient for a clinician to accurately treat or determine the appropriate diagnostic tests to order, so having the ability to test for a broad set of clinically relevant targets is critical. Rapid molecular diagnostics tests with this capability have the potential to aid clinicians in patient management decisions. We validated the microarray-based, sample-to-result Verigene Respiratory Pathogens Flex Test (RP Flex) for the detection and identification of viral and bacterial causes of respiratory infection from a nasopharyngeal (NP) swab specimen.
